winter. It was also a time of tracking, searching for signs and pursuing game
animals. Plan to spend the afternoon outdoors practicing fire by friction,
cordage making and atlatl throwing. This free program will be a real treat for
any outdoors enthusiast. The program will begin at 1:30 at the Lower Mount

September 14 thru November 2
– It’s Fall Foliage Season, the most colorful time of year to be
in the Pocono Mountains! Since the Poconos cover such a large area, there are
three distinct zones in which the colors reach their peak at different times.
In the Northern Zone (Wayne County and parts of Pike County), the colors are at
their brightest between October 1 and 14. In the Central Zone (Monroe County and
lower Pike County), the best time to see the colors is in mid-October. Head
towards the Southern Zone (Carbon County) between October 19 and 31 to catch
the latest peak display of the season. Thanks to the Pocono Mountains Visitors
Bureau, leaf watchers can call the 24-Hour Pocono Mountains Fall Foliage
Hotline at (570) 421-5565 to find out exactly when and where to see the
colors at their peak throughout the four county Pocono Mountains region. This
is the perfect time for a quiet walk along a mountain trail, a scenic country

September 15 – Murder, Mayhem
and Sundry Misadventures in Wayne County will be presented at 7:00pm at
Lacawac Sanctuary, a 545-acre nature preserve on Lake Wallenpaupack. Learn true
accounts of various crimes, accidents and assorted misadventures that took
place in the 19th and very early 20th centuries.
Accidents took place because safety laws that we take for granted today did not
exist at the time, and because items routinely used in the home, such as
kerosene lamps, posed a daily threat. Methods for detecting crime were
primitive, so many husbands died of 'indigestion' and women died from a 'fall
down the stairs.' Common illnesses were also often fatal; even a cut or blister
could lead to blood poisoning and death. Also included are some funny, true
accounts of rascals, domestic disputes and neighborhood feuds. This social
commentary on life in the "good old days" of Wayne County will be
presented by Ann O'Hara of the Wayne County Historical Society and
research librarian Gloria McCullough who compiled these interesting
Wayne County news clippings into a book by the same name. Refreshments will be
served. The cost to attend is $5 and pre-registration is required. For
more information or to register, call the sanctuary at (570) 689-9494 or email info@lacawac.org. The 545-acre Lacawac Sanctuary is a non-profit
